Now that is out of the way lest have a little closer tour around the phone in all its glory.
Starting as always at the top we have a pinhole mic, an IR emitter some antenna break lines on either side and a mystery aperture which I have never been able to determine what it is.
Next around the right-hand side is where we will find two more antenna break lines, below which sits the volume rocker and then the power button which can be configured to launch Google Assistant should you wish.
On to the bottom, we have some more antenna lines that are flanking the USB Type C port. It is also down here that we find the dual SIM card slot with its waterproof rubber ring seal. on the other side is the bottom-firing speaker.
Moving around to the left we have the all-important Alert slider which is one of the OnePlus phone’s highlight features for the brand. This is also flanked by antenna break lines.
The antenna design on the Nord 4 is very interesting as they have had to work with materials to get the best performance for your signals. Now obviously radio waves and metal are not good bedfellows. OnePlus has redesigned the internals of the phone to allow for a more compact antenna array, they have also managed to use the metal construction of the phone as a means to boost the signals coming into the phone. This is something I am keen to test in due course over the next few weeks.
Onto the back is where we will find snuggled up in the top third is the camera module. This contains the Lytia 50MP camera alongside the 8MP ultrawide. Both of these are accompanied by a dual LED flash. I do really like that they have used metal on the rear of the phone as I have missed this from phones like those from HTC back in the day. It is a nice change from the slippy and fragile glass that we saw on the previous-generation Nord CE 3 Lite. I am not to annoyed that I don’t have a case to put this in.
When we move around to the front at the very top is where we can find the 8MP front-facing camera that sits under an imperceptible small slit where the earpiece speaker is hiding. below this stretches out the expansive 6.74 inch 1.5K display containing a massive 450 PPI, the resolution is 2772 x 1240. The screen is a really crisp and vibrant colour and can max out a peak brightness of 2150 nits. Now I have not had much time with the phone but I will be testing this in some very bright conditions over the next few weeks so we will see how effective this screen is in some variable conditions.
On the screen is the obligatory factory-fitted screen protector which is included in most phones from Chinese-based manufacturers. The screen protector is not as annoying as it is on curved displays because it is a flat screen. I do like that we are seeing a trend of going back to flatter displays and more angular phones long may it continue.
A few more things I want to cover before I finish this post are to do with battery and also the water resistance.
So first up is the water resistance level. It is an IP65-rated Nord series phone which I believe is a first for Oneplus and I am all here for it, particularly with the British summer going as well as it has been so far!
It also sports a large 5500 mah battery in a dual cell construction which will allow the SUPERVOOC charging of up to 100W with a compatible SUPERVOOC charger, which sadly must be bought separately.
That wraps up the unboxing and tour of the device. If you want to get yourself one of the Nord 4 devices then you can do so now by going to the OnePlus website and preordering now with prices starting at £429 for the 12GB RAM and 256 GB version and the 16GB RAM 512GB version coming in at £529.
